Location 3 - Old Gaol/Railyards

Site: West Terrace/North Terrace/Port Road (click to enlarge)

Requirements: Clearing land and old buildings.

What’s good about it:
  • Easy access
  • Transport
  • Close to city
  • Benefits city businesses
  • Rejuvenates West End
  • Close to accommodation
What’s not so good about it:
  • Is a ‘pokey’ area surrounded by train lines
  • May not be ‘close’ enough to the city
  • Creation of extra parking given land size
  • Was proposed site for a new hospital
What Col Light says:
A good site close to transport but perhaps not close enough to the main ‘cultural’ side of town. Probably a better site for a hospital. Although ‘environmental’ impact here would be lowest.

It's the best spot with the most potential for adding to the scenic look of Adelaide's riverfront. Would definately provide an impetus to clean up that end of the riverfront.

Why not move the trains altogether - I want to see a new trainstation under victoria square. Yes, a subway. Under grote street. Made the centre of the city the hub of the action. People can then walk or catch trams to everywhere else. You get rid of the trainlines running between or under the new stadium and the riverbank as well.

This is my choice as the best spot - there's also plenty of room here to build two stadiums - Adelaide United has raised the possibility of building a rectangular stadium here. You could have a smaller rectangular stadium, a major new AFL stadium (that could be used for other sports as well), with Adelaide Oval and Memorial Drive just across the river it would become a sporting hub.
