I definately like the idea of utilising the west or south parklands. The south parklands gives local businesses such as SouthPark the opportunity to house interstate visitors and the current elephant and castle could be upgraded to service before and after the game spectators. The tram runs pasts there offering transport from north of the city and glenelg, its a short walk from keswick station (maybe 10-15 mins)and that part of the parklands needs something done as it look ugly.
the west parklands would be good if there was more entertainment venues close by plus more than one train line.
I like the old gaol/railways idea but as long as it is within walking distance of the city, which I dont think the old gaol site is. The docklands stadium is really good for this reason, as it is within 15 mins of the majority of CBD.
All in all its a hard sell to use vic park or any area close by, as there was so much back lash at building a simple grandstand.
The old gaol is historic and should be done up as a tourist attraction and integrated with an upgraded riverbank precinct that would be co-developed with a new stadium where the rail yards currently are.
I'd get rid of trains from there myself and build a new train station underneath victoria square with a subway running to it under grote street. Then you could do like the Dome in Melbourne and put car parking underneath the new stadium (extra revenue) or maybe just have it so the North Tce entry brings you in at the top concourse and the ground is closer to the riverfront. That'd be great because you could develop a big open area on the river front with cafes and bars and restaurants around it and the convention centre and trainstation/casino and festival centre.
